This film was originally to star Frank Sinatra as Harry Callahan. However Ole Blue Eyes had a hand injury from some years ago, and was not able to properly grip a hand gun so the voice had to back out.
This film was written for a man in his late 50’s
The story was written for a man Sinatra’s age of about 58 years old, and opposite a younger partner maybe in his late 20’s. Other A listers were offered the role such as Steve McQueen, and Paul Newman. The role of Dirty Harry Callahan eventually landed in the lap of Clint Eastwood who was about 40 years old when filming began. Dirty Harry’s partner played by actor Reni Santoni. Who was in his early 30’s still a veteran working with a younger detective.
The film is loosely based on the zodiac murders that were happening in northern California in the late 1960’s. It was a big deal back then. When I was a kid our family lived in Sunnyvale from 1968 to 1970; So we were their during this time. This was a big story in the news locally and nationally.
Early 70’s crime films had more realism
The Killer in this film was played very brilliantly by young actor Andy Robinson. Harry Callahan and his partner tracking him through out the film, and through the city of San Francisco. While the killer brutally murders. This is a very violent film for its time. Dirty Harry was in theater at the same time of the Oscar winning The French Connection. There both films changed the way these films were shot, and written, and paved the way for such films as Serpico, the Seven Up’s and Death Wish with a lot of realism.
If you can handle a lot of people being killed, and realistic blood Dirty Harry is for you. Of course their are some very good veteran actors in supporting roles such as Harry Guardino, John Mitchum, John Vernon as the Mayor. Dirty Harry was directed by Clint Eastwood’s directing mentor, Don Siegel. This is the film that made Clint Eastwood a super star in Hollywood. Clint Eastwood was a co-star in most of his previous film, and part of large ensemble cast. This film gave him the power to make the films he wanted to make.
